Volunteering at Greenpeace UK

Volunteering with Greenpeace
Emily volunteered with us before joining full-time

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Greenpeace. There are two ways in which you can help us deliver our campaigns; by becoming an active supporter or by volunteering at our office in Islington, London.

We have various different departments here at Greenpeace UK; Marketing, Supporter Services, Active Supporters Unit, Campaigns, Actions, Policy & Solutions, Media, Web Team, Publications, Finance, Human Resources, Reception and Information Systems - all of which occasionally need help from volunteers.

Voluntary opportunities range from helping with administrative tasks, mail outs, data entry, data analysis, translations, design and editing, research projects, assisting with events coordination, painting, sewing, carpentry, and many more. Length of opportunities can be anything from a few hours to 1 day to a year.

If you are interested in volunteering in our office, please complete the volunteer application form and either fax (020 7865 8202), email recruitment.uk@greenpeace.org or post your application form to:

Human Resources Department

Canonbury Villas

Why volunteer? Let Frances explain...

Once received, we will keep hold of your application and inform you of any opportunities which may arise. We aim to place people according to their skills, experience, interests and availability. The more information you provide on the application form, the greater the likelihood of us being able to find an appropriate way to use your skills. We are very fortunate to receive a high level of interest for volunteering in our office, but with only limited opportunities available, this unfortunately means it is not always possible to place everyone who applies.

All voluntary opportunities in our office are between 10am-6pm Monday to Friday. Our office is closed at weekends. To volunteer in our office you must live within easy travelling distance to our office and be a minimum of 18 years old. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for us to place those applicants applying from overseas or a long distance from London. I'm afraid we are unable to provide or help with finding accommodation. However, we are able to cover lunch and travel expenses within London only.

If you wish to volunteer overseas please contact one of our international offices directly - Greenpeace offices worldwide.

To volunteer on one of our ships, please send your CV to:

Greenpeace Marine Services
Ottho Heldringstraat 5
1066 AZ Amsterdam
The Netherlands

Give as much information about your relevant skills and experience as you can and good luck!

Hi! I'd really like to volunteer for a charity at Glastonbury festival 2011. How do I go about applying?

You could contact our US office about volunteering; otherwise I don't know what other volunteering opportunities there are in the States but they might be able to point you towards something else as well. web editor gpuk

Hi, I'm currently saving up to travel around America next year and although I'll have a lot of sight seeing to do and I'd also love to volunteer somewhere over there for a while! Are there any contacts, or campaigns you can recommend talking to about this? Or any ideas in general! Thanks! Penny.

Hi Liam,

thanks for your interest in volunteering for Greenpeace. As you may know we have lots of local groups around the country. You can see what they get up to on Groups pages At the moment the closest group to you is in Dundee (not that close, I know), but there may well be other people in your area who'd like to start a group in North East Scotland. Please email our active Supporters Unit at getactive@uk.greenpeace.org to find out more.

Cheers,

Joss

I want to get more involved but i live in the north east of scotland in a small town called lossiemouth, Moray, is there any opportunities near where i live ?

Hi I am so much impressed about the work of the greenpeace regarding the environmental issues. There are worldwide international offices in different countries. I didnot see in some developing countries like Nepal. I am glad to hear about what is being the process to include Nepal under the program of Greenpeace international. Since I am interested in campaigning in climate change being himalayan country, dur to higher impact of climate change in this region. I wish I want to involve in Voluntary work. Thanks

Hello! The 'active supporter' link isn't working, or at least on my computer. Is there any other way I could get involved in becoming an active supporter? I turn 18 in August and would love to gain some experience organising events or campaigning. Thanks

Hi Ive just joined my local group and wonder how I go about volunteering for Glasters? Lucy

I'd like to create some strong, thought provoking art work for greenpeace .. but im under 18, is there anyway you could use it ?

Hi Joe,

Everone who goes on an action has to be trained first in the principles of non-violent direct action. The easiest way to get involved is to join a local group first - our groups provide the volunteers who (together with staff) make up our action teams.

To find your nearest group, just go to our communities site and type your postcode in to the search box. Then contact the groups administrator, invite yourself along to their next meeting and let them know how keen you are. Once you are NVDA trained, you'll be well on the way to playing a role at the sharp end of Greenpeace campaigning!

Thanks for your interest,

Joss

How would I go about becoming an activist for greenpeace? Is it something people do themselves for you guys or do you actually train and organize people. Every time I hear about a group of people fighting back against big companies I wish I could do it too. Thanks Joe

Where do you advertise your paid vacancies? I'm particularly curious to know when and where your Research Laboratories near me in Exeter recruit.

Hi Dani,

Thank you for your email and message of support, it’s great to hear that you’re so passionate about helping the planet.

There are a number of ways in which you can help  us.  It sounds like you’d really enjoy being a member of our  Active Supporters network.

Unfortunately, most of the time, in order to do this, you need to be at least 18.  This is because the active supporters sometimes engage in activities of questionable legality.  However, some groups participate in different types of activity, such as running stalls, banner painting, leafleting etc.  Please contact your local group using this link.  They will let you know if there is anything you can do to help them out.  I hope they can, as your passion for the cause is invaluable to us!

I know it can be very frustrating not being able to participate in the way you want to however.  As such, if your local group cannot take you on board, could I recommend looking around at other environmental organisations?  We all have shared goals and it is best for us to cooperate with each other rather than compete!  People and Planet, for instance, do take on under 18’s. Their website is here.

If you would like to help us with online lobbying,  which involves writing emails to politicians and comany bosses, please sign up to our online campaigns here.

I do hope you find something that you can help us with and to get involved in a way that suits you, as it would be a terrible shame to lose the potential support of someone who is obviously very passionate and committed to doing something good for the world.

Thanks again for your support!
