Arctic defenders still in police custody

Posted by lisavickers - 3 September 2010 at 7:00pm - Comments

We are still waiting for our climbers to be released but hoping they will be back on board the Esperanza soon. They are sorely missed - especially Timo's lovely guitar playing in the evenings. Anais is talking about preparing a "Welcome Back!" banner for them and every time the captain or our campaign leader walks past we keep asking "any news?". The answer is still no. Nobody knows exactly when they will be out and perhaps they wont be allowed back to the ship at all.

Sim, Timo, Jens and Matt are truly heroes! I don't think I have ever witnessed such an amazing direct action in all my time with Greenpeace. Timo, Matt, Jens and Sim scaled the oil rig by climbing a structure that looked unclimable to me. When I look at the footage of their ascent - my jaw drops open in amazement. They spent over 40 hours up there - suspended above the churning Arctic waves through freezing winds and periods of loud noise from the thrusters that keep the rig in position. They kept themselves in good spirits throughout the occupation and never complained about the conditions they were in. We're so very proud of them for stopping Cairn's Arctic drilling for so long. They really stopped it for 40 hours - and that's quite an achievement.

While our climbers were on the rig and since they have been arrested - we have received some very touching messages of support from so many people. I've  been gathering them today so that I can show the climbers when they're back on board. I thought it would also be nice to share them here (see below) and say thanks to everyone who sent us these messages - and the others I haven't managed to copy yet. It means a lot to us to receive them and I have already printed off several pages of them and passed them around over dinner in the mess. I even saw our chief engineer reading them and watched his face light up with big smiles. And he rarely smiles so this is quite an achievement!

Thank you so much. I'll let you know more news on our heroic Arctic defenders when I have it.

It would also be nice to know how many messages that you also recieved that did not support this venture.

By only concentraing on only those that high-fived and slapped your back is a rather arrogant and short sighted.

You intentionally violated safety protocal. For a company who regarded the safety of their climbers as paramount, you still violated a safety protocal.

You are demanding that the UK goverment stop issusing licences to deep sea drilling in the UK due to the regulations not being safe as they are out-dated since the GOM disastor, but you still violated safety protocal.

The safety rules are not there to pick and chose when it suits you, they are there for all to adhear too regardless of your intentions. If you truly believed in safety you would not have embarked on this adventure.

Safety rules are there to protect and you violated them so blatantly without even a second thought to the ramifications should any of your actions have ended up in a fatal situation. That is not acceptable in law and certainly not in society.

Shame on you.

Irresponsible of Greenpeace to send young men in one og the words countries with toughest laws and punishment. Lets hope for the best.
In same time Greenland have very human laws, but also have extremly tough laws punishment too.

What's with the 2 above comments???

Greenpeace rock, they're an inspiration and I love them to bits. All this stuff about 'safety protocol' is a load of rubbish. I'm sorry, it just is. How safe is drilling in the arctic, do you think?

If it weren't for Greenpeace, things could be a lot dirtier than they are already.

All my support to everyone on (and temporarily off!) the espy. Best of luck and wish I could join you!!!

Fantastic action. Great that you are out there to witness and stop this crazy and risky scrabble for oil. All the best to the climb team, amazing ! Si

Ok I'm not one for enthusiastic comments, and I suspect the bursts of praise above, is more an indication of the media used (Facebook & Twitter) than back slapping.

However the individuals in question do deserve praise, for taking action in harse conditions, to demonstrate the insanity of even considering drilling for oil in the Arctic.

The Greenland police are clearly also a disgrace, both in the ways they have lied to the media, but also their complete bias towards the interests of the oil company, potentially at the expense of human life.

Various comments on this series of blogs are from Greenlanders, who's views I respect, but are perhaps represent the more rabid, right wing locals.

Equally it seems clear that drilling in the Arctic will be a massive disaster for the people of Greenland. Most of the profits will go offshore, and then when there is an accident, Cairn will disappear, leaving Greenland to pay.

More disturbingly the continuing increase in greenhouse gas emissions will destory Greenlands ecosystem faster than anywhere else. If that oil rig continues to drill, then Greenland is screwed.

So one would expect that views as to drilling, for a black toxic substance, offshore are more divided both in Greenland and internationally, but the internet is ever the home of rabid right wing bloggers.

Finally many other comments read like the spin of a PR firm, so I wonder who Cairn have employed to argue the toss at every point. We live in a digital age and someone is being paid to generate such criticism, from a briefing published by the corporate interests Greenpeace is clearly doing a great job shining a light on.

So I guess its time to reclaim this space from the rabid reactionaries and the PR firms. If you agree post your support below.

"They really stopped it for 40 hours - and that's quite an achievement." Lisa's blog (&other fabrications...smells like the Brent Spar ghost is still around...old habits die hard)
Let me explain.....operations on Stena's semi-submersible stopped for less than 24hrs .... drilling did indeed stop, however it was the end of a hole section and so the stop was scheduled; they couldn't drill any further as they had run out of MAASP.
No drilling was being performed on Stena's drillship either as it was preparing to move to a new location having successfully completed it's 1st well.
If Greenpeas had jumped on the Don a couple of days earlier, rather than wasting time on fuel-guzzling joy rides in their inflatables and helicopter (what was that about anyway? Helicopters burn a phenomenal load of juice! ... spectacular photos btw...thanks for that)....anyway, if they'd done it earlier, they could have actually been there during drilling on both rigs AND in fine weather!!
Better luck next time....after you refuel!

So wonderful to see all those supporting comments.

Greenpeace stand up for what is right, speak up on behalf of everyone and those who cannot speak with a human voice and risk themselves for the sake of our environment: they have courage and professionalism and fortitude. And they don't lack determination, even when they are threatened, criticised and misunderstood. They don't run away from the consequences of their actions. They are never violent, or abusive. They never look for praise or thanks. They are not trained soldiers, they are not criminals; they are everyday people with an extraordinary amount of passion and courage. I think we should all honour them for that.

When you feel discouraged and disheartened with humanity, when you feel that all around there seems to be corruption and war and violence, you can look at Greenpeace and know that there IS good in humanity. There are people who are trying to make a difference, find the truth - there are good people on this earth.

So thank-you Greenpeace. Thank-you for your courage and honesty, for your determination and passion. You're leading the way. But don't feel alone, we're all here with you!

Is this post an example of ignorance, arrogance or just plain stupidity??
Let me try and educate you on a few of your totally incorrect observations:
"The Greenland police are clearly also a disgrace, both in the ways they have lied to the media, but also their complete bias towards the interests of the oil company, potentially at the expense of human life."
What??? Please give me details of the media lies, I am truly interested. The Police were not biased towards the oil companies, THEY UPHELD THE LAW. IT'S THEIR JOB!
"Various comments on this series of blogs are from Greenlanders, whose views I respect, but are perhaps represent the more rabid, right wing locals".
ABSOLUTE STUNNING ARROGANCE. Because you do not agree with these people (whose country it is by the way) you have to demean their opinions and label a whole country as 'rabid right wing'. Disgusting.
" many other comments read like the spin of a PR firm, so I wonder who Cairn have employed to argue the toss at every point. We live in a digital age and someone is being paid to generate such criticism, from a briefing published by the corporate interests Greenpeace is clearly doing a great job shining a light on."
Once again your arrogance is unbelievable. Simply because the vast majority of comments against this ill conceived action have been well thought out obviously informed (unlike the meaningless, "Go Greenpeace Go" childish, worthless rhetoric in favour) you have to assume that they are posted by professional PR firms. Get it into your head that Greenpeace DO NOT speak for everyone. The majority are against this type of dangerous action that threatens the safety of law abiding operations. Yes; whether you like it or not LAW ABIDING. If you are suggesting you are above the law then you should come out and honestly admit that Greenpeace are anarchists.
And finally what is it with you and the word rapid? Do you feel if you say it often enough that it will add more weight to your empty arguments and stir up support in your sadly depleted ranks?
Throughout the postings relating to this dangerous, totally unsuccessful media stunt you have been given factual arguments against it. It is a very sad indictment of Greenpeace that your only response has been lies and insults.
And in answers to the lies posted by 'Lisa' from Esperanze (Lisa: you didn't mention where you are today?? Are you still defending the Artic?? Or have you had to go and find more fuel as you have wasted all that you had??) this morning:
"Sim, Timo, Jens and Matt are truly heroes! I don't think I have ever witnessed such an amazing direct action in all my time with Greenpeace. Timo, Matt, Jens and Sim scaled the oil rig by climbing a structure that looked unclimable to me. When I look at the footage of their ascent - my jaw drops open in amazement. They really stopped it for 40 hours - and that's quite an achievement."
If you look at the photos of the rig you will see there are ladders going up each of them. The're what the crew use when they want to climb up and down the legs.
Noise from the thrusters that keep the rig in position?? Well no, the thrusters are 20m below the surface of the water and are silent.
They stopped the drilling for 40 hours??? Well we all (including Greenpeace supporters) know you didn't and the whole sorry escapade was a disaster. You didn't even get the media coverage you wanted.
And finally to just post positive responses in an attempt to try and convince us (and yourselves???) that you had support for this action is laughable.
Ha, ha, ha.

What a wonderfull list of good wishes to the greenpeace massive, the world is truly on your side,,,,,,,oh hold on a minute youd better scratch that, of all the millions of people on this planet you managed to get support from a handfull, in fact it doesnt even cover one side of a sheet of A4, & i wouldnt mind betting you sent some of them yourself.

Love the maniacal laugh at the end there, realitycheck. Are you swivelling in your black leatherette chair, stroking a Persian cat?

I can't see anyone suggesting everyone agrees with Greenpeace. If everyone did agree, Greenpeace wouldn't need to do this sort of thing. It wouldn't need to exist. But then neither would you, so I guess it wouldn't be all bad.

Police are biased towards vested interests such as companies, just as they are corruptible and defensive of self-interest, just the same as anyone else. Get over it.

It would also be nice to know how many messages that you also recieved that did not support this venture. By only concentraing on only those that high-fived and slapped your back is a rather arrogant and short sighted. You intentionally violated safety protocal. Kickthehuskie; there you are again!! You are very narrow minded in your opinions; I have noticed!! One thing the western world doesn't have to worry about too much in this day in age is free will. PLEASE give them at least enough credit to know that they knew what they were letting themselves in for, and what they were risking! It's quite amusing for me also that you only have something that happened back in the 90's to refer back to: what about all the good Greenpeace have done; what they have achieved??; you might have to actually jump off your soap box long enough to educate yourself though!

Personally my opinion is that the bloomin oil companies (Cairn Oil and the rest!!) should have a strategy plan in place for this kind of issue (their responsibility!!), but that's oil companies for you; just like the lack of strategy planning for incidents with deep sea oil drilling (Mexico); yet wise old David Cameron has given the go ahead for the same thing to happen in the Shetland Islands; and YES!! still no strategy plan for another oil spill; apparently, it wont happen again!!!

Ambassadors for good causes have been putting their necks on the lines for years; nothing ventured, nothing gained!! We could all learn something from kickthehuskie; stay at home in your comfy arm chair and fight a verbal war with yourself; this is how you can help to riase awareness and save the planet!!!
