Defining stupid on an iceberg

Posted by lisavickers - 30 August 2010 at 5:14pm - Comments

Yesterday we witnessed two tug boats towing a big iceberg near the Stena Forth drilling ship. They do this to move them out of the way of their drilling operation. They call it "ice management". We call it "insanity". Last night we realised we had a chance to project messages onto this iceberg so we asked people on Twitter and Facebook to suggest new slogans for Cairn Energy. Within two hours we had 500 suggestions and picked two to go alongside the Cairn logo on the iceberg. "We just don't care"  suggested by Frank Plonka on Facebook and "Defining Stupid" suggested by Matthew Higginson.

We then had one hour to prepare the slides for our projector on board and Anais kindly put together the logo and new slogans so I could print them out on transparent sheets. Leila and Jon, our climate campaigners, set up the projector on deck and we did our best to get the slogans onto the iceberg for Will, our photographer. But sadly the weather conditions got the better of us -- so much fog and rain.

Our captain navigated the ship into a perfect position for us - several times amid lots of small icebergs in the water. Jon and I took turns to hold an umbrella over the projector and Leila fought to get the slides in the right place while Will did his best to take the pictures. But the fog simply wouldn't let our projection reach the big berg. So we did some onto the fog itself - next to the iceberg and only managed to get one of the new slogans to show up (ish!). We're a little disappointed with the end result. But we're proud of the fact that we gave it our best shot in challenging conditions and we'll try it again if we get better weather.

We couldn't believe that so many people suggested hundreds of slogans in such a short space of time! Cairn's original slogan is "Discovering Hidden Value". Here's some more truthful alternatives suggested by supporters. If we could beam all of these onto an iceberg here - we would.

  • Ruining Nature's Value - by Joan Stricker
  • Discovering Hidden Madness - by Breandan McGreary
  • Discovering inevitable disasters - by Asia Szkudlarek
  • Destroying obvious beauty - by Keirsten Edwards
  • I just Cairn't get enough - by Constantin Kawhol
  • Devaluing our future - by Claire Frost

Thanks for all of your suggestions! It was inspiring to see them all last night.

You can still make sure your message gets to Bill Gammell the CEO of Cairn Energy by sending him a letter today.

Tow the Glacier to drought area
new

This glacier is an excellent water resource. It needs to be towed to a drought area for use or placed in a reservoir. Is there anyway I can help to make this happen?

For a start it would probably melt by the time it got to a drought area as drought is caused by heat, but my all means you could all try jumping in the freezing water & push the bloody thing,,,,,,,sheesh just when i thought these bods are lacking in intelligence along comes one & confirms it!.

Greenland makes me want to cry. Why does a country with such a beautiful environment, and such a caring ecological attitude, do something like sell licenses to oil companies, why, why?!

I don't really get what this is about other than an opportunity to project a slogan onto and iceburg.

What if that iceburg had hit the Stenna Don???

You could have seen a situation similar to the Mexican Gulf and certainly some significant environmental damage caused by the sinking of the rig. Peoples lives could have been put at huge risk.

It's not insanity it's SAFETY.

I understand the wider issue here and it needs to be addressed but you just go too far. I swear your actually looking for martyrs.

How about:

'we're just in it for the cash'

'if something goes wrong we'll declare bankruptcy before you know it'

'the Danish / Greenlander tax payer can sort out our mess'

Try to live one day in the green philosophy in its broadest concept in Greenland.
Your house or hotel have electricity from hydropower plants, borrow a car with electricity make by electricity from hydroelectric plants( possible). Borrow a rowing boat and fish or catch animals that live their whole lives out in the extremely beautiful nature in Greenland. No animals in iron cages, pumped up with drugs.
Their are experiment with new and alternative arctic houses in high scientific level, of course, with solar energy.
Over 75% use of green hydro power plants in Greenland(including theese hydroplant´s under construction), while there beginning efforts for hydrogen production from excess hydroelectricity, two provide green energy to the remote areas with no hydroplants. We also see Greenland experimenting with solar and wind energy too. Greenland is like Norway and Iceland Pioneers two develop green energy in huge and large scale. s it ahve the level og demokracy and administration.
Go out and tell the rest of the world of Greenlands efforts in Greenpeace´s main goal. This will help inspirering the world to do the same and go further away in what world have in its veins to day : Black oil.
At the same time, Greenland is one of the new countries to preserve supply of raw minerals ( mine activity) to the large foreign countries, so Greenland has great knowledge of global aspects. And hunt of natural born fish and animals is use. Not born and raised in cage, but lived in the beauty of nature.
And finally; The icecap of Greenland has always melted in all times. Freeze at winter, melted at summer. No sensation in that. Large and very huge iceberg has broken off as long as there have been ice in Greenland.

We call it "insanity"...

Yeah, totally insane to move something out of the way that could destroy the installation.. the only means by which the greenlandic people will be able to be self sufficient in years to come...

Why don't we see interviews with the greenlandic people on your website....
Is it anything to do with the fact that you have NO support here.....

Hypocrites....
