Exposed: Heartland's climate disinformation campaign

Leaked documents from inside one of America’s most powerful thinktanks have revealed a multi-million dollar systematic disinformation campaign to cast doubt on the science of climate change.

The explosive documents posted on Desmogblog – a website dedicated to monitoring groups that peddle false claims about climate science – show that some of the wealthiest and most polluting corporations in the world, including General Motors, Bayer, Pfizer, GSK and Microsoft, are helping to fund the Heartland Institute.

One of the leaked memos shows one “anonymous donor” paid the group more than $8.6m between 2007 and 2011 to promote climate change denial. The billionaire oil barons the Koch brothers are also implicated.

One of the revelations is that the best read climate blog in the world, Watts Up With That, is set to receive $90,000 in 2012 as part of their campaign. The man who runs the blog, Anthony Watts, is frequently quoted in major British media outlets including The Times. Two years ago, Left Foot Forward revealed how Watts was tweeting links to the British National Party.

Similarly, ‘scientists’ receiving platforms on some of the biggest broadcasters in the world – including the BBC – are being paid monthly retainers to peddle a climate sceptic line. One document says:

“At the moment, this funding goes primarily to Craig Idso ($11,600 per month), Fred Singer ($5,000 per month, plus expenses), Robert Carter ($1,667 per month), and a number of other individuals, but we will consider expanding it, if funding can be found.”

A particularly sinister objective of their campaign is "dissuading teachers from teaching science" – part of their "global warming curriculum project". For this a coal industry insider has been hired, at the expense of $100,000 a year, to develop a plan to teach children that climate change is a hoax.

Another document says that Heartland has not yet tried:

“To raise funds from businesses with a financial interest in (shale gas) fracking. In 2012 we intend to correct that oversight.“

The leak will raise new questions about who is funding Lord Lawson’s influential lobby group in the UK, Global Warming Policy Foundation. Lord Lawson has consistently refused to reveal who is funding their campaign.

David Henderson is both a fellow of the Heartland Institute and chair of the advisory board of the Global Warming Policy Foundation.

The director of this group, Benny Peiser, as well as Telegraph columnist James Delingpole, have spoken at a major conference of climate deniers organised by the Heartland Institute.

You can read all the leaked documents on DeSmogBlog.

This blog first appeared on Left Foot Forward.

Anyone in posession of those documents are in posession of stolen items. Releasing the information on those documents will encourage litigation. I hope Desmogblog has deep pockets.

cheers

These documents show clearly that the constant claims of 'well funded climate denialism' were never true. Alarmists simply made them up. This denier funding is peanuts.

As a skeptic myself, I never really knew if deniers were well funded or not. Now I know they never were well funded. Its the greenies who have been well funded all along.

Thank you Desmogblog. Nice work

It's interesting that recently there has been an increase in anti-Greenpeace commenting - not just here but on the international site as well. It's fair to say that people will object to issues that don't fit in with their view of the world. Certainly 'greenies' will post their own views on sites that peddle anti environment issues. That's the way the world goes round. But when world turning slows down, that's when the debate really heats up. The real question is: why is the world slowing down? It's when the question is considered critically and evidence postulated to provide an answer - that's when the debate becomes a process of attack rather than considered analysis.

When Atlas felt the weight of the world on his back, he didn't reject it he sat down to ponder. Too many people think the world is disposable. That's why the environmental movement exists in the first place. We need to teach people to ponder and not just throw the world away like some playball.

It beggars belief that there are some utterly shamless individuals who will even yet attempt to defend these ruthless bare-faced liars. Liars who put their own short term profits ahead of the future wellbeing of billions of people.

The truly pathetic "it's only a few tens of millions" (from only one denialist lobby group among hundreds) doesn't take into consideration that the denial industry does not have to fund research of any kind. All they have to do with these massive funds is spread lies and propaganda in key areas.

Key areas like our children's schools. It is hard to know which is the more chilling - that evil people will attempt to brainwash our kids or that individuals like 'Klem' above are so shameless that they will troll environmentalist groups either for money or for free and make pityfull 'excuses' for these selfish pigs.

Klem, maybe you should read your own comments before hitting publish, as the above makes you sound like an idiot.

Your argument is that because the Heartland institute (one of many US right wing think tanks), has been caught being funded by big buisness to sponsor bad science and climate denialists,  then you declare it's proof that such corruption isn't happening?

This evidence is clearly part of the picture, and there is alot more money out there going to feed a publicity machine that's peddling these lies. Try www.sourcewatch.org/ to start with, and then some of the Exxon sites (http://www.exxposeexxon.com/ or many others), to get a hint of the scale of what's going on, and them remember that most of these deals, and funding remain secret.

The oil, coal and car industries, combined with the oil producing states are spending alot of money to maintain the world order where they have the ability to pollyte now, to make a fast irresponsible buck to screw up our future.

I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next man, but this is ridiculous! Gosh, a think tank gets funding... What did you think they ran on? Thin air? This article obviously fails to mention that the main "incriminating" document was a fake (the one that included the "stopping of teaching science" line), that the money paid to the scientists was - horror of horrors - to write a scientific report, and that the money paid to Watts (of which he recieves nothing personally) was to set up a climate data website (using NOAA data!). It's a bit rich of a political lobbying organisation like Greenpeace (funding $380M+) to complain about another political lobbying association (funding c$8M)! In short: get a life.

And using "Left Foot Forward" as a source! Hilarious! Now we *know* the watermelon name fits - Green on the outside, Red in the middle......

Wow!

Peter Gleick (AKA Mr. Climate Crock of the Week, AKA Mr. Integrity in Science) confesses to stealing the doc's. Law suits on the way.

See you in jail Pete.

Wow, wow, wow!

It is so great being a climate denier. This is fun!

Children, children, children...have you any idea how many BILLIONS is pumped into 'climate alarm'? The numbers are astronomical...and yeah...a lot of it comes from your sworn enemies Koch, BP, Shell, Exxon and the various 'climate criminals' around the world.

And what about the 'Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming'?...Where is it?

You're little bubble's bursting guys....reality should be kicking in about now to even the most zealous of you. It's the sun. It's the sun...it's the sun. As we appear to be entering a solar minimum it should become quite apparent that your self righteousness drum beating has done little more than extract TRILLIONS from the world economy already, damning millions of people to misery, poverty and death.

Just because you see human's as a cancer...doesn't make it so. Our grandchildren and great grandchildren will look back in horror at the implications of what you all believe so passionately today.

Spreading fear and guilt is about as evil as you get.

Wake up from your little green fantasy and contribute to the betterment of mankind. Endorse and support the industrialisation of Africa for a start and help pull millions out of starvation, poverty, disease, misery and death.

 Or....is that not important?
