Heating up in Bali

The sparks are flying in Bali as the talks enter the final round. After the US tried to derail the negotiations, Al Gore took the stage and lambasted the Bush Administration for blocking negotiations.

"[M]y own country - the U.S. - is principally responsible for obstructing progress here in Bali,'' he said, before urging the delegates to "find the grace to navigate around this enormous obstacle" and move forward without the US.

Telling delegates they held the destiny of all generations to come in their hands, he compared the passivity of some nations to those world leaders in 1938 who didn't take the threat of Nazi Germany seriously.

Then France stepped into the ring. In a heated meeting, France's environment minister told the head of the US delegation they could forget a trip to Paris for a meeting next year unless they came to the table with a Kyoto-style proposal with binding commitments to cut emissions.
