Over 5000 Airplot owners and counting

our climate our land

You guys are amazing. We were hoping for a big response to our announcement that we've bought a piece of the third runway at Heathrow, but it really has been overwhelming. Over 5,000 people have already signed up as beneficial owners, and the comments, emails of encouragement, phone calls, ideas and donations have made this a truly exciting start to the plot to stop Heathrow expansion.

We made page two of the Sun under the headline "Operation Baldrick". BAA called it "clever" on the Channel 4 news at noon. The Evening Standard called it "ingenious".

From the moment the news started leaking out last night, and I started putting up all the info on the site on my slow USB mobile connection, people started to join, twitter, blog, and even managed to start a Facebook event before we got in there.

We're hoping we'll reach 10,000 by the end of the day so please invite your friends to join the plot.

We've had volunteers on the plot all day digging so we can lay down a chalk message - OUR CLIMATE OUR LAND - like the old English chalk outlines (if someone knows what they're called please tell me).

Our lawyers are now examining ways in which all of our owners can act as a legal obstacle to plans for a third runway at our busiest airport. Your names will appear on the title deeds of the plot, and the individuals will be formally represented at future planning enquiries and challenges to compulsory purchase orders.

The only thing left to do today is head to the pub for a celebratory pint.

I was listening to the radio about this and heard a legal guy claim that it wouldn't make any difference because the land was bought for the purposes of "Vexation" and frivolity (I think they were the terms used) and under a 2008 modification to the law, the developers can ignore the ownership issue for those reasons.

So, I was thinking - what if all the registered landowners planted a tree dedicated to a loved one and made it a forest of remembrance?

I have no idea if the land parcels are big enough to cope with thousands of trees, perhaps we'd have to share a tree between a few people's parcels. At least then the land use wouldn't be frivolous or purely vexing would it?

J :)

This may only be a small delay, but you cannot stop BAA and the aviation industry from expanding. This will put my future job at risk

The third runway at heathrow is vital for the UK's economy and for the UK to be able to compete with Germany and France. The people of Greenpeace only have a one track mind on this issue and cant seem to see the benefits this runway will bring, not only for our economy as i said earlier but the thousands of jobs it will create which is even more vital for the UK as unemployment is starting to rise in the economic slump.

As far as im concerned the third runway is essential despite the polution it will create, the pros outway the cons in this case!

To allow aviation expansion and yet reduce CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 (as now legally required), means every other industry has to become virtually carbon neutral.

A surveyor friend of mine has done the maths and worked out for every job created in the UK airline industry, 50 others have to be sacrificed to accomodate the emissions forcings.

Furthering the idea of a forest of rememberance, how about getting the land consecrated for the inturnment of ashes?

Or creating a wildlife sanctuary for rare endangered snails (if we can find any).

Go guys - any chance of doing the same at Stansted too?

Why not set it up as a multi-faith meditation area. It won't be long before you'll be able to show that BAA and The Government are anti-Muslim, anti-Jew, anti-Bhuddist, anti-Christian and anti-anything you like, and of stirring up religious intolerance.

Perhaps all those who have bought "the land" should be banded from flying from London Heathrow. They obviously are proactive against the expantion of Heathrow and very likely pose a threat to the security of the air terminals at Heathrow if allowed to use them.

As they are likey to be agasinst flying then this should not pose any inconvinience.

Hey guys,

Pleasure to add my name to the list, really inspiring to read the story and hope things go well for the campaign! Even if compulsory purchase legislation ends this, you've managed to massively stir up debate, and of that you should be proud. Thought you might like to see this:

One of many I'm sure.

Genius! Hooray! Smart thinking there; it's incredible that you managed to procure that plot!

This has made me feel so much better - a renewed belief that some humanity does care. Mahatma Ghandi said 'You have to be the change you want to see in the world' and Greenpeace is doing just that! Tell me when another protest is and I'll see if I can get there! We need to preserve our lives and planet, not just our jobs and money. I'm sick and tired of seeing people my age (nearly 18) already giving up on the world - don't let it happen! Keep fighting, so that in the end, even if the runway is built, your conscience is clear.

Thankyou so much Greenpeace, you inspire hope!

I am wondering whether we could also set up some sort of mechanism for us "beneficial owners" to have an "interest" in those homes that are up for compulsory purchase - so that say 10 other people also "owned" each home besides the actual owner - if you see what I mean.

re the idea on planting a tree - what we could do maybe along these lines is set up a community garden - with different households having a mini-plot (say 4' x 4' - as in Square Foot Gardening ideas) and grow food there. Then the land is indisputably being "useful". Good P.R. maybe if the food was then given away - say to homeless people.

Hi guys - great idea! I grew up under the main flight path of Heathrow and I have to tell all those who snivvel on about how much Britain needs a third runway, that they should try living under the flight path before they judge. I bet they wouldn't live there if you paid them. Anybody who now says that it was my parent's fault is obviously divorced from financial reality.

By the time I was 14 I was so used to noise that being on holiday somewhere quiet freaked me out completely, I got panic attacks because the silence scared me.

So how about you guys play the noise of a jumbo taking off outside the houses of the MPs who are main advocates of this plan until they wise up. Perhaps you could also spray their gardens with very fine dust (the kind that a combustion engine pumps out across the sky) whilst you are at it? Of course you'd probably have to travel a long way from Heathrow to find them...

And if you can buy any further land, I would be glad to see my donation go towards the price...

This really really annoys me this countries growth and development have really slowed over the last few years! have you thought about what u green fingered losers have done, a new development would :
*Create jobs for the development of the site
*Create new jobs within the airport
*Give us better transport links
*Give us "cheap" flights
And don’t lie all of you want cheap flights! Can I also point out that more spending is needed to help us through these hard times?

So I think you better re-think what you are really all about, do you just care about the planet and not its occupants, or do you care about both the planet and the people on it?

P.s
I do believe that one of your protests about oil actually pushed BP towards one of the biggest oil fields ever found, but in these times where you "seem" to care so much why haven’t you reminded people of that little fact.

Thanks for all the great ideas for the land. The papers for the land only came through Friday so we're still building the site for Airplot, but we do want to hear all your ideas for taking Airplot forward both on the plot, online and far and wide.

ConcernedEarthling: we've got some great lawyers working on this and the purchase is by no means for the purposes of vexation - but the health of our climate. You may have seen the results of our Kingsnorth trial where a jury found our activists not guilty because they acted for the greater good of the planet, nothing frivolous about stopping climate change. But you're right we will make sure that we use every means possible to stop the compulsory purchase.

On the economic side of things, economist and government advisor Sir Nicholas Stern says that "climate change represents the greatest and widest-ranging market failure ever seen." Basically climate change will destroy the whole world’s economy.

The government’s favourite think tank, IPPR says the Heathrow proposal risks becoming a white elephant and that “The economic advantages of building a third runway at Heathrow have been greatly overstated and the environmental case against it is overwhelming.”
They also state that the data underpinning the government's whole civil aviation policy is fundamentally flawed and that the government's calculations regarding the economic benefits of the Stansted and Heathrow Airport expansion plans had used a false "base", resulting in over-estimation in the economic benefits and under-estimation of carbon dioxide emissions from the proposed developments.

But the government is sure to contradict its own advisors and disguise expansion as necessary for economic stimulus, that may make it more palatable to some. Even though it will be 10 years before construction even begins.

And we certainly aren’t saying an end to all flights. But 100,000 flights a year go between Heathrow and cities within 500 kilometres of the airport - destinations easily reachable by train. The number one destination is Paris. Pleeease. What we need is an affordable, high speed rail network.

You guys are idiots, if Heathrow don't build this 3rd runway the countries economy will collapse, greenpeace will be held responsable for this, your tax will go sky high you will end up living in tents on your stupid plot, thanks guys!

Dear Economy,

if we don't do something about climate change you, dear economy will collapse. If we continue to pollute and tarmac up the world there will be no more pressing problem than the flooding, lack of fresh water, enormous storm damage and problems with the food supply - not only in the so-called third world - your SUV won't help you there.

And we will hold short sighted posters like you responsible.

Why don't you open your brain up and read the evidence, climate change is here, friend, it isn't some idea or scientific maths model. All we can do now is stamp on the breaks and try to stop the process from spiralling completely out of all known boundaries.

A great idea!

Well done GP, superb idea..

Simon

I am with Greenpeace all the way on this one, they just need to say the word and I will be down at Heathrow infront of the bulldozers. Gordon Brown is not thinking of the environment on this decision he is just thinking this is a short term economy boost, with repercussions that he will never have to accept responsibility for! We must act now, the people of Britain must wake up and realise the damage that this runway could do. We have already got Stansted expanding. No airports should be expanding! When ever you are ready Greenpeace.

What proof do you have of any of the statements you made?

Thanks i dont care for supporting us

To all those people concerned about jobs: The increasing damage and attrition of ecosystem services will result with flooded homes, loss of our natural heritage, disruption to agricultural production, massive human migration and overrall a pretty miserable existance for everyone.

If we were forced to pay for the services that our planet currently provides for free, our yearly tax bill would be exorbitant.

great u my have slowed it down but u cant stop change

and get a job u pot smokin hippys

hi i would like to introduce my self as redwar
clearly the title say it all am anti greenpeace

GREAT IDEA GUYS!!!:) I am 100% with you!!!

..And for all those who are truely selfish and worry ONLY about material stuff (money) why don't you worry about the WORLD for once.. I would just want to ask you: what type of World would you like to leave to your children??.. please stop being so selfish and so close-minded and open your eyes and see that we are killing ourselves with all the pollution we have created over the years and all of the gas emissions released daily.. I really would like to have my children know the World I knew when I was little, not a Worldwide dumpster..

Thank you for this action guys.. I really support you 100% in all of your campaigns, and if I need to move to the UK to grow trees or fruits or vegetables I will certainly do it!! :)

Brilliant stuff guys, simply genius! Just thought I'd let you know it's called a Geoglyph according to the old Wikipedia. Keep up the good work!
