Seeing the light at Earls Court

Judging from recent comments on this site, it seems there are a few people out there who still believe the myths that compact fluorescent bulbs are ugly, ungainly and undimmable.

But going green doesn't mean sacrificing good design, and CFLs can be versatile, stylish and even beautiful. We've been working with designer Jason Bruges (he of Wind to Light renown) on an installation using fully dimmable, compact fluorescent bulbs and, well, I'll let the film do the talking:

Why are we doing it? Energy efficiency is one of the most powerful tools we have for fighting climate change; switching from inefficient incandescents to CFLs across the UK would reduce our carbon emissions by the equivalent of two power stations.

100% Design is packed with designers, architects, specifiers and lighting buyers from major retailers. We're hoping to show designers the versatility and creative potential of low energy technology and persuade them to start using CFLs in their day to day work.

A big thanks to the Jason Bruges Studio, 100% Design, Green TV and all of the team who've been working around the clock down at Earls Court. If you'd like to go and see the installation, the exhibition opens to the public on Sunday.

If you want to get active (assuming you've already changed all the bulbs in your home), you can join our push to put pressure on UK's retailers to take incandescents off their shelves by writing to Trevor Bish-Jones, the CEO of Woolworths.

You can also find out more about the installation, our bulb campaign, and have a look at the best of our exhibition pics on Flickr.

Glad you liked it. The installation used Varilight bulbs - you can buy them online through the 1ststopelectrics website. There are several other companies selling dimmable bulbs - I can't recommend any in particular but I know both Ryness and ebulbshop sell them.

Happy dimming!

I just realised I wasn't very clear there. The Varilight bulbs are the first ones you can use with standard (incandescent) dimmer switches. The others need special CFL switches.

Cheers,
