You could say that all big oil companies are the bad guys of global warming. They have discovered more oil than we can use without causing irreversible damage to the climate, and they continue to search for more.
But Esso (ExxonMobil) gets the prize! Why? Because Esso:
- Esso powers the throne of George Bush
Esso donated $1,086,080 to George Bush's Republican Party at the start of his election campaign. Unsurprisingly, Bush then did exactly what the oil giants wanted, pulling the United States out of the Kyoto protocol as soon as he was elected!
- Esso refuses to accept that its business increases global warming
The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently said that fossil fuels ARE causing global warming. And scientists predict that two out of three people will lack sufficient water, and millions more will starve by 2025, as a result. But Esso still attempts to pass these off as, "scientifically unfounded scare scenarios"!
- Esso funds multi-million dollar propaganda fronts to discredit climate science
Esso supported the anti-Kyoto 'Global Climate Coalition' until it achieved the aim of persuading Bush to pull out of Kyoto in 2002. Esso continues to support the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the US Council for International Business (USCIB) - both anti-Kyoto corporate lobby groups.
- Esso uses incorrect or outdated scientific studies to mislead the public
Lee Raymond (Esso CEO) used a petition signed by '17000 scientists' as evidence to dismiss global warming. The so-called scientists included fictional TV characters!
- Esso refuses to invest in renewable energy
While BP and Shell invest $500m each over the next three years in renewable energy projects, Esso will not be spending a penny. Instead Esso is aggressively expanding oil and gas production and lobbying for access to pristine areas such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.
- Esso is the biggest company in the world
If any company can afford to do something about global warming, Esso can!
Esso chooses to wreck the climate. We can choose not to buy Esso's products. Don't buy Esso!
