APRIL, you can't spin your deforestation

Here's a tip for anyone looking to do public relations for forest-destroying companies. The correct way to respond to a simple question about how much forest you're clearing is not to ask the journalist to stop filming.

APRIL is the second largest pulp and paper company in Indonesia. It's responsible for destroying hundreds of thousands of acres of rainforest to make cheap paper and packaging.

That's not what it's PR officers will tell you though.

They'd rather talk about their sustainable forest management strategies - a crafty euphimism for replacing acres of beautiful forest with row upon row of acacia trees.

John Vidal, environment editor for the Guardian, went to Sumatra to find out how forest destroyers like APRIL were trashing this environment. Having seen the destruction first-hand, he asked David Goodwin, APRIL's external affairs director, just how many trees the company was chopping down.

Rather than spoil the surprise, I'm going to suggest you head over to the Guardian and watch the film for yourself.
