Last night another piece of the reaction to our Slaughtering the Amazon report fell into place, as British shoemaker Clarks agreed not to source leather products from Amazon deforestation.
This means that there has been a rapid and remarkable shift in the supply chains of some of the companies we investigated in the report:
- Adidas, Clarks, Nike and Timberland have all agreed to stop sourcing products from areas of deforestation in the Amazon and are calling for suppliers to implement a moratorium and strong traceability standards for leather.
- Marfrig have agreed to support a moratorium on further deforestation for cattle ranching.
- The Brazilian environment minister has said that "We have started to close in on [environment] criminals." (via the Guardian).
- But in the meantime, JBS, a major supplier of beef products to the UK market continues with business as usual, so there is more work still to do.
