There is currently a lot of public concern about shale gas and the hydraulic fracturing (fracking) extraction method, so it wasn't surprising that our "Gasland" screening attracted over 30 people yesterday.
Although we hadn't advertised a post-viewing discussion, such was the level of concern raised by the film, most stayed behind to voice their opposition and ask what Greenpeace are doing about it. I'm not aware of any specific campaign, but I'm sure it hasn't escaped the attention of the campaign strategists.
It's quite a topical issue due to the large field being explored in Lancashire, in fact rather bizarrely it's being discussed by Andrew Marr on Radio 4 as I type this. The Daily Mail is also spreading pro shale gas propaganda.
Thank you to Chris Burden for organising the event and everyone else who helped yesterday, and also to Adela Nistora for the publicity artwork.
Hi there,
Mick from the Belfast group here. Well done on promoting the issues around Fracking. I know that greenpeace can only have so many campaigns on the go at once but the campaign against Fracking I believe should be a campaign Greenpeace UK champion as there as so many issues that will affect us all if this is allowed to develop.
There are huge plans for fracking in N.Ireland and with the fracking making front page news due to earthquakes in your area surely this is the time to get Greenpeace to support us. I would love to hear from someone in Greenpeace UK about this. I have contacted them but have had no response.
We are showing Gaslands in Belfast on Tue' 15th Nov' @ 7pm in the blackbox arts centre and have a panel discussion after with Friends of the Earth staff, local politicans and local campaigners taking part. We are struggling to get over 1500 names on our petition to have a ban put in place. I am directly asking for help from greenpeace as a monthly supporter and active local group member. Please contact me to have a discussion.
Well done Doggie, keep up the good work pal.
Mick
