I went down to Croydon a couple of days ago to join the awesome launch of a campaign against Nestle. Greenpeace are trying to persuade them that they should ensure all palm oil in their products comes from sustainable sources. At the moment palm oil in products such as kitkat comes from plantations that are a direct source of rainforest destruction in Indonesia. It's a HUGE problem.
It was my first action so I was feeling excited and nervous, not really knowing what to expect. The whole thing was absolutely brilliant. We descended on Nestle HQ at about 7.30am, I was dressed as an orangutan. Some of us were on the high street covering billboards, others climbing on the Nestle building letting down a huge banner, some handing out leaflets, but most were orangutans. We aped about and made a great visual impact.
I was really stoked to be invloved. I think this kind of thing is sometimes the only way to make things change. As citizens we really need to push sometimes. It was so much fun being there, and hearing about the impact that it actually had afterwards made us all feel fantastic. I'm still buzzing off it now! Nestle promised that they would cancel their contract for direct sourcing from the worst palm oil company. Result! And the public have responded so well.
Still a long way to go though......
What a great first action, well done! Targeting corporate branding looks like a winning strategy.
Looks to have been a really effective action. Congraulations.
Did any of the Nestle staff join you for a break at 11.00 ? !!
Those Kit Kats in the vending machine at work don't look half so tempting !
