A how to guide: Street campaigning

Posted by sseeney - 17 March 2010 at 9:05pm - Comments

People often ask us how we go about campaigning in the street in such an effective manner. Well, what follows is an easy step-by-step guide on how to do it.

The approach:

In this photo we have Ian, a member of the Bethnal Green group (he’s the one wearing the white jumper). Having located his target he attempts to make eye contact and entice her in with a friendly smile.

The presentation:

In this photo we can see Ian engaging with the member of the public and explaining to her the aims of our campaign. On this occasion we were campaigning against the Government's plan to renew the British Trident programme. Notice how much happier the member of the public looks in this photo than in the previous one: Greenpeace bringing joy to a street near you!

Having explained what are the aims of our campaign, the member of the public is offered the chance to express her opinion and help us bring about change. In this case we were asking people to answer a simple question: do very think the government should spend £97Billion on new Trident programme? FYI – on the day when these photos were taken 230 people said they thought it was a bad idea, 8 said it was a good one.

The End:

Following this, Ian thanks the member of public for taking part and informs her that if she should like to learn more and follow what we are doing she can always check the Greenpeace Website.

Hopefully this series of photos will have shown you how easy it is to be a volunteer street campaigner for Greenpeace. No previous knowledge or skills are needed, only passion and belief in what it is we’re trying to do. It will also have hopefully shown what we do during street campaigning, so next time you see us in the street, please stop, say hi and find out what we’re up to.
