All the way across Birmingham
We've been out campaigning for the country to Go Beyond Oil these past two Saturdays. Last week we took the campaign to the City Centre where we handed out leaflets and also got people to colour in the Go Beyond Oil Rainbow logo on a post card that had details of the campaign on the back. The post card will then be sent on to their local MP with the aim of getting this message reflected in the energy bill which is
currently going through parliament. This week we took the campaign to Moseley where we received a better reception from passers-by who weren't in such a rush to get the shopping done as they were the previous week. Over the next few weeks we'll be taking the campaign across Birmingham to get as many people as possible to help us go beyond oil.
What does it mean?
At the moment we are all dependent on oil and have an ever increasing demand for its use, however there are consequences to this increasing oil consumption such as climate change due to rising carbon emissions. Oil is a finite resource and conventional sources of oil are running out (a recent report by Dr. Colin J. Campbell, someone who has worked with all the major oil companies claims that world oil production peaked between 2005 and 2008). This means the oil industry is having to go to far greater lengths to find unconventional sources to feed our addiction to oil. Unconventional oil like the Tar Sands in Canada, deep water drilling or drilling in the Artic could cause catastrophic environmental damage (the recent spill in the Gulf of Mexico). The idea of the campaign is to highlight positive alternatives to oil (see our Go Beyond Oil website for more details) and also to try and get our message reflected in the energy bill.
