November Get Active e-newsletter: Green jobs and the battle for the Energy Bill

Posted by Richard Martin - 12 November 2010 at 6:04pm - Comments

While the country waited for the government to announce cuts in the comprehensive spending review, Greenpeace volunteers scaled the Treasury to remind George Osborne of a very simple fact. A Green Bank=more jobs.

With a measly £1 billion to setup the bank, and no clarity yet on what sort of bank it will be, George has a long way to go to deliver on the green new deal. So if you'd like to help by sending him a reminder, then please pick one of his promises to send to him as a reminder, and / or for a bit of fun, click on his forehead.

The upcoming Energy Bill offers another chance for the coalition to make good on some of those green promises. They could introduce an emissions performance standard for new power plants, stop making it easier for companies to exploit oil in UK waters, provide stronger regulations to improve home insulation and stop setting up hidden subsidies for new nuclear power.

Greenpeace volunteers have been out on the high street, collecting postcards to send to MPs to ask them for a greener Energy Bill. This weekend the Stop Climate Chaos coalition (including Greenpeace) will be lobbying MPs to demand a strong Energy Bill, and towards the end of November Greenpeace volunteers will again meet MPs to demand they support specific amendments to that bill.

It's all happening now, and we need your help.

Campaign review: Airplot, one year on

by Anna Jones, climate campaigner

A year ago, with the aviation campaign in full swing, Greenpeace volunteers organised a series of tree planting events with local MPs (and parliamentary candidates) across the UK. Twinning the trees with the home of the Cox apple at Sipson. We reached out to civil society, to schools, to churches, to community groups and to anyone who had a suitable plot of land to plant a tree.

One year on, we'd like to hear how the trees are doing and ask everyone involved to visit their tree, to blog about it for the Greenpeace Active website, and to celebrate the very successful campaign against the third runway at Heathrow.

Campaign update: Victory at Kingsnorth, and on Trident

Some more good news this month - the proposed new coal power station at Kingsnorth was cancelled (again) and the decision to replace Trident has been put on hold for another 5 years.

A big thank you to everyone who has continued to campaign behind the scenes on these issues. You know who you are.

Upcoming event: December Climate March, Saturday 4th December

If you are coming to this year's climate march on Saturday 4th December then please come meet other Greenpeace supporters at Marble Arch at 11.30am. Look out for the Greenpeace banner and/or contact Sebastian for more details.

Please bring your own Greenpeace banners, tabards, t-shirts, Go Beyond Oil materials and dress in black for what we hope will be a Mexican Day of the Dead theme.

Skillshares and training events

If you have been active with Greenpeace for six months or more, and would like to attend a non-violent direct action training day, then please speak to your Network Coordinator. The next event is planned for Oxford on Saturday 6th November.

Finally there are regional skillshares planned for Greenpeace supporters new and old, so whatever your involvement, please come along to the:

Scotland skillshare Saturday 6th November - Please email Jo to book your place.
Southwest skillshare Saturday 13th November - Please email Malcolm to book your place.
Northern skillshare Saturday 20th&21st November. Please email Jo to book your place.

Thank you for all of your hard work helping Greenpeace campaign. It's much appreciated.
