There is a new campaign in the pipeline, focussing on finding local solutions to the problem of overfishing. There will be a big role for the Brighton group in this, so our meeting last Thursday was mainly about planning for the new campaign, and how we can best make use of our group here in Brighton.
Thank you and well done to Jules and Lucy, who chaired the last meeting and came up with all these fantastic ideas!
Please have a look at the notes below, and if you have any other ideas, or any resources or contacts which you think could come in handy, please reply to this e-mail. Cheers!
Key campaign demands:
Setting limits for the number of fish that we take out of the sea
Limits based on science rather than politicians’ decisions
Fishing rights and other financial incentives should go to fishermen who fish in a sustainable way.
We talked about some of the ideas for actions:
Dressing up as fish
Getting the UK fisheries minister Richard Benyon to a local BBQ where we could present him with a large montage photoboard (like charity giant ‘cheques’)
Take photos of people, boats, public, industry, fish & chip shops with ‘sustainable’ stickers.
IDEAS for venues/photos:
Festival on The Levels, Brighton
Chilli Festival (part of Brighton Food Festival)
Jubilee St – South of England Show – Hove Lawns
Springwatch Festival in the first week of June
Brighton Art College – photo exhibition of over-fishing
Two great ideas:
1. Something (stall, show huge photoboard montage?) outside the Sealife Centre/Aquarium (still closed for refurbishment and not sure when re-opening www.visitsealife.com/brighton) because people visiting aquariums with children may have very little knowledge of ‘dark’ fishing practices…
2. Get on the Eurostar and get a captive audience of the MEPs coming back from Brussels for the weekend. Get on at Ashford International (or at source at Brussels Gare du Midi) dressed as fish/pirates, or as fishermen with a rod and line and ‘reel them in’
