Giving Shell Hell (with a bit of Harlem Shake)

The Save the Arctic Crew

Bristol East Greenpeace returned to Gloucester Road to remind Shell that we oppose their plans to search for oil in the Arctic. Over a dozen volunteers, some dressed as polar bears and a natty narwhal, braved the near Arctic cold to make local people and motorists aware our campaign.  We got plenty of beeps from passing motorists and it was good to see that there were significant periods when the garage forecourt was empty.

To warm up, the Arctic crew undertook the Save the Arctic version of the Harlem Shake.  Yes, a veiled attempt to gain international recognition with a crazy rendition of the Internet craze that is sweeping the ether!  See it below!  Well done for all those who turned up to support the event - especially Claire and Tanya who joined us for the first time.

Photos of the event can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/48798428@N02/

Last Winter Shell had to withdraw from the Arctic due to damaged safety equipment and worsening weather conditions, but we know it is their intention to return to the area to renew their search for oil in the Spring.  In the meantime the American authorities are reviewing the decision to grant Shell a licence to operate in the Arctic after one of their oil rigs ran aground off the coast of Alaska.  It is increasingly clear that the company does not have the technical capability to operate safely in the Arctic and if they do resume their activities then the fragile Arctic environment is at risk.
