On Friday 7th January, Sue and Carol popped in to see Stephen Williams MP (Bristol West) to ask him a few questions about the Energy Bill currently passing through the House of Lords.  We delivered to him 80 cards from concerned constituents collected on the streets in Castle Park, St Marks Road, Gloucester Road and College Green.

We tried to convey our key concerns regarding the Energy Bill:

  1. 1.    We believe that stronger “Green Deal” energy efficiency measures are required to encourage the systematic upgrade of Britain’s homes.  We would like to see targets set on how many homes will be insulated, when and to what standard.

  1. 2.    Oil companies are pushing into remote, deeper waters in their pursuit of oil. We believe this exploration puts these pristine environments under threat and drives further climate change.  We would like our MP to oppose clauses of the Bill that facilitate hard-to-reach UK oil exploration.

  1. 3.    The Energy Bill does not include the promised regulation to progressively drive down emissions from coal- and gas-fired power stations through Emissions Performance Standards.  We want regulation to progressively restrict CO2 emissions on all new and existing coal and gas electricity generation plant.

Mr Williams agreed to follow up on these issues with David Cameron and/or Chris Huhne (Energy Secretary) so we are waiting on further updates and copy correspondence.
