I do hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a great time welcoming the New Year.....cheered up by the fact that sHell’s Arctic drilling rig has run aground in Alaska....filled with fuel...and in high seas...maybe it will put sHell off going to the Arctic this year.
We didn't do too badly in the South on Saturday 15th December, we had almost 20 volunteers from Bromley, Croydon, Runnymede, SW London and Southwark at our protest at sHell's Battersea garage....and quite a few people were stricken by flu!!!
We all finally got together in Islington...not so much a protest, more a blockade of the corner with us Southerners and almost 50 ‘North Londoners’ and three Polar Bears - we all had a great time and fresh-made pizza’s at a nearby pub.
Climate Deniers are all for blaming the Sun on our chaotic weather....I tend to believe it is the CO² and the fact that with Global Warming, more water is held in the atmosphere, so when if falls, it falls harder – coupled with the fact that our northern Gulf Stream swapped places this year, going South in Winter and North in summer- not so long ago, we didn’t know this system could move up or down.....so another change to take into consideration.
A BIG THANKS to all of you who have supported Greenpeace in the last year...you make all the difference when we are out in the street informing the public about Climate Change and the companies or government actions which do not help us achieve Climate Stability.
Our action planned for this time was to be against the pairing up between Waitrose and sHell and however much we wanted to run the campaign locally, Waitrose put their plans on ice....we’re watching though, just like we’re watching the sHell debacle in the Arctic..
We did achieve a lot with the EU proposing a change to their fishing laws, which means that we may have a ‘better’ fishing policy which takes account of fish stocks, sadly though the UK Government’s plans for Marine Reserves was cut to a mere 31, down from over the original 100+
Still onwards and upwards for this year............we are still working to protect the Arctic by taking action against sHell and have a few other ideas up our sleeve too.......One of them is the design for a flag to be flown at the Arctic…
