Climate Question Time in Hampstead & Kilburn

Posted by Neil Jones - 16 April 2010 at 12:31pm - Comments

200 people from all over Hampstead and Kilburn, a marginal seat in North London, came out to Ask the Climate Question on Wednesday evening. All six prospective parliamentary candidates for the constituency gathered in St Stephen's Church on Rosslyn Hill for the election hustings organised by volunteers from Camden Greenpeace and other local green groups including Transition Belsize, Friends of the Earth and Camden Cyclists.

All three candidates from the main parties agreed that climate change was an urgent and pressing priority, with far more radical action needed from both government and the public, and several candidates said that it was the most important issue of the election. On local issues, there was a consensus that London needed greater legal protection for cyclists, and community action to cut pollution.

It was really encouraging that there was such a high level of engagement with these issues from the voters of Hampstead and Kilburn and the candidates, but it’s important that we make sure that they keep to their word when they’re in power.

Thanks to everyone who put in so much hard work in the run up to the event and on the night.

The candidates are (in alphabetical order):

Bea Campbell (Green)
Ed Fordham (Liberal Democrat)
Glenda Jackson (Labour)
Magnus Nielsen (UKIP)
Tamsin Omond (The Commons)
Chris Philp (Conservative)

If you couldn't make it to the event, then it's not too late to put your questions to the candidates on our YouTube channel.

And have a look at the Ask the Climate Question website for more information on the campaign.
