News has leaked out about the contracts for two proposed giant aircraft carriers: HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Queen Elizabeth. Despite mouting doubts about whether their construction should go ahead it seems millions of pounds has already changed hands regarding these two ships. It seems odd to say the least that at a time when so many public services are under the threat the present Government can find this money to spend on something whose value is highly questionable. What are they for? 'To project British power ala 19th century gunboat diplomacy? At this time of high unemployment it is important to give people work. But there so many useful things that could be done in fields of conservation, renewable energy, energy efficency and so on that are surely of more value to our society than imperial/cold war relics?
