E.on and RWE have pulled out of bidding for a new nuclear power station in North Wales. This is a welcome move. It clarifies the obvious role the state plays in keeping the nuclear industry going and how it is totally reliant on taxpayer bailouts to keep it spluttering along.
Following Germany's wise decision to phase out nuclear energy and replace it with renewables the two companies in question can no longer raise the money to put in bids to build a new reactor at Ynys Mon (Anglesey)
Because of this a Nuclear Free Wales, perfectly able to power itself in a sustainable way can emerge. And remember the construction and maintenance of renewable energy will create a green collar economy which can alleviate the indignity of poverty and unemployment currently bedeviling many parts of Wales. For it is almost certain that any support for a new nuclear power stations was based on an urgent need for jobs and employment rather than any great fervor for nuclear. The nuclear industry isn't finished but it is in a lot of trouble. One of the best ways to finally put it out of business is to create a working alternative based on renewable energy and energy efficiency-never has there been a better time to harness the wind and not the atom....
