Bright sunshine and a flag-blowin’ breeze helped the high spirits of the Cornwall group when we set up our Common Fisheries Policy campaign stall on the Prince of Wales pier in Falmouth.
Everyone was excited about the launch, and with our banner strapped proudly to some railings we soon caught the attention of the public (and a seagull or two!)
Lots of people were passionate about this campaign; from local folk already friendly with fishermen, to groups seeking more knowledge about the campaign, and even one lovely couple who were so besotted with Cornwall that they have a copy of the Falmouth Packet sent to their home up country every week!
Due to our position, we managed to nab some seafaring fellows (and a little girl who was a dab hand with the felt-tips) when they moored just below our stall. We snared a fisherman coming ashore for a pasty, who was delighted that we wanted to show our support to the small scale sustainable fishermen. We gave him a couple of flags as he left, and excitingly the first one has been spotted in the harbour, waving its message for all to see!
We managed to have a chat with the crew of one of the water taxis in between runs, who were – like most people – disgusted with the state of the fishing industry at present, and more than happy to sign postcards and take a sticker or two.
There was even a musical accompaniment from the pier’s regular busker, who signed a fish card between classical strains and some nautical melodies.
Our new face Lee did brilliantly alongside regulars Vicki, Ellie, Zoe, Colin and Becky.
It was a great start to the campaign, with over 100 fishtails signed and collected to give to our local MEP, Julie Girling. We’ll be ready to rouse more support at the official launch on the 26th of May!
