Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station, Encirclement and Blockade.

Posted by Richard Griffiths - 12 March 2012 at 10:46am - Comments

Possibly 500 people tuned up for the enciclement on Saturday the 10th of March and a field was set aside for those parking cars and pitching tents. The encirclement took place around the site of the proposed Hinkley C reactor following speeches and songs from suporters of Greenpeace and others such as Stop New Nuclear.

During the night Group 4 security men attempted to clear the campsite at night but were successfully dissuaded by the police who were much more reasonable and tolerant.

On the evening of the 10th the blockade started and I noticed several Japanese people at the head of the blockade directly in front of the main gates. They were chanting prayers and had lit several glass lamps and were facing the police who stayed in front of the main entrance gates.

The vigil continued through the night and I rejoined the blockade in the early morning. My impression was that it was successful and peaceful and passed off without incident.

My message to EDF is: take your nuclear stations away (decommission) from the UK and every other site before there is a repeat of the events of Windscale, 3 Mile Island, Chernobyl or Fukushima.

We need renewables, microgeneration and CHP not radioactive waste and sites around the UK.
