Inspired by the beautiful day outdoors today, and the thought of the kinds of damage drilling in the Arctic could do to the pristine Arctic environment, I spent a couple of hours today at the local Shell garage talking to their customers.
Why? I hear you say! Well, because Shell is just about to send its drill ship to the Arctic to drill five exploratory oil wells in the Alasken Arctic. 'Just' because it is currently being held up by fellow Greenpeace campaigners in a New Zealand port. The dangers of drilling for oil have been seen by most of us over the past few years, with many reports of spills in the news. The Arctic is a fragile environment and an oil spill here could cause long lasting irreparable damage, impacting local people and wildlife. Working in such an extreme environment means that cleaning up a spill would be virtually impossible.
Many of Shell's customers that I talked to were surprised and concerned to learn that they were planning on exploring drilling in the Arctic. If like them you want voice your concern please act now and write to Peter Voser the CEO of Shell telling him not to destroy the Arctic here: http://act.greenpeace.org.uk/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=18&ea.campaign.id=13413
