On Saturday 10th December, 60 Greenpeace volunteers, including seven stormtroopers and ten digital gurus (or should that be Yodas?), hit the streets of Central London to talk to the public about Volkswagen. For Stormtrooper sightings outside London - see here.
They were asking members of the public to sign action cards asking VW to turn away from the dark side and to stop lobbying against laws that would make cars more efficient and cut Europe’s CO2 emissions.Despite the cold weather and being mildly sabotaged by a couple of thousand Santas, they managed to get 1736 actions cards signed! This is a phenomenal amount and will hopefully make VW turn away from the dark side and live up to their green image.
You can see a few of the photos here:
We had a constant stream of tweets and photos from our digital gurus at the five locations (Tate Modern, Tower of London, Southbank Christmas market, Oxford Street and Trafalgar Square), which you can see on the live Twitter feed we had in this blog on the main page of our website or by searching under the hashtags #gpactive, #spotthestormtrooper and #vwdarkside
The photo of Nick the Stormtrooper, on his way from here to Trafalgar Square, received over 200 likes and 61 shares on Facebook, even being spotted by one of our colleagues in a blog in Germany:
Of the 60 volunteers (active supporters) involved, about 13 were new to Greenpeace and as their first campaigning experience greatly enjoyed themselves - and promised to be back.
If you would like to get actively involved with Greenpeace, then please find your nearest network on our getactive page, click on join our group - to receive regular email update, and then for your new year's resolution email your local coordinator, come along to the next meeting, and volunteer to help out with the next local event.
If you'd like to read more about how the day went then please read some of the volunteers blogs from Bromley, Islington, West London, Greenwich and more to follow.
The force is strong out there.
Similar Stormtrooper sightings have occurred in Oxford, Hammersmith, Bristol, Southampton, St.Andrews, St.Pauls, Worcester, Leeds, Camden [video], Liverpool, Bishopston and Totterdown (Bristol), York and more.
