The earth is a fragile place, threatened by deforestation, climate change, the plundering of the oceans and the threat of nuclear war. For 40 years Greenpeace have campaigned to defend the natural world and promote peace, and ever since the beginning we have relied on the efforts of energy of Greenpeace supporters and volunteers – people just like you.
Greenpeace may not have the financial clout of big corporations, or the bureaucratic resources of government, but we do have is a network of friendly, passionate people who campaign and fundraise locally for us. So please, if you want to do something different in 2012, come volunteer with us, we really need your help.
Ways to get involved (in the UK)
1) Wherever you live, we are looking to train reliable people, who are happy to write a personal letter to their MP (or similar) between three and six times a year, and to go on to meet their MP (or similar) at least once a year. You can register for an information pack here.
2) Wherever you live, if you have a creative, fun idea, as to how you’d like to raise some money to support Greenpeace’s campaign work, and the efforts of other volunteers, from a sponsored walk, to a benefit gig then you can download an information pack here, and see what other sorts of events people have organised here.
3) If you live close to a Greenpeace local group / network, then you can volunteer regularly by coming along to the next meeting, saying hello, offering to help out at the next event, and getting stuck in. You can find out more here.
Greenpeace local groups / networks offer a whole range of opportunities to help from organsing and taking part in local public engagement events, to helping at larger local events – like public meetings, photo ops and film screenings, to taking part in big national events, from protests and marches, to non violent direct action.
Getting involved with a local group / network is also a great way to meet friendly new people, who share a common interest, often organise fun social events, and it’s a great way of learning a whole range of campaigning skills.
If you’d like to find out where the nearest local group / network is, then please enter your postcode here and then get in touch with the local coordinator. The Greenpeace/active pages also include a directory of all our local groups / networks (at the bottom and blogs, Tweets and updates from around the UK.
This is a video slideshow, produced locally, about what one of those group / networks got up to in 2011.
2011 roundups from around the UK are rolling in, so please also check out Telford Greenpeace -A year in words and video, Southampton Greenpeace 2011 - the year in pictures, Camden Greenpeace - 2011 in pictures (as above) and more as they come in.
Finally if you don't live in the UK, then your local Greenpeace office will have more information about how to get involved, so please start your journey at the Greenpeace International website.
The next step is up to you. Wherever your energy and talents lie, there’s a way of helping campaign for a green and peaceful world. Please get involved, we do really need your help. Together we can change the world.
