A film night to mark Greenpeace's development over four decades

Greenpeace activists from across South London are putting on a free film night to celebrate 40 years of campaigning for environmental and social justice.

A series of short films will be shown upstairs at the Amersham Arms Pub, New Cross, on Friday March 23rd.  The evening will start with a short welcome video from Greenpeace International’s executive director, Kumi Naidoo, who points out:

‘Today, we continue to face critical issues that threaten the health and safety of the planet. We must call on those with a basic moral conscience to say enough is enough. The environmental and social injustice that we see cannot go on. We need to work together now more than ever before.’

Other short films will document past Greenpeace successes from the banning of nuclear testing to prevention of seal culling.  Greenpeace activists from Lewisham, Southwark, Lambeth, Merton and Wandsworth will then highlight why they joined Greenpeace and the variety of campaigns they have been involved with.

Camilla Berens, Greenpeace area co-ordinator for Greenwich and Lewisham said there will also be a special guest on the night.  She added: ‘We’re keeping our guest’s identity under wraps for now. All I can say is that they are related to a current Greenpeace campaign which involves persuading the car manufacturer Volkeswagen to stop blocking EU proposals for higher emission reduction targets and better fuel efficiency standards.”

Camilla continued: “The film night is a thank you to everyone is south London who has supported Greenpeace campaigns over the last 40 years. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the evening and we’re looking forward to meeting some new faces.”
