On a beautiful morning on the 4th July four of us travelled from Malvern to the Kingsnorth Power Station site in Kent. We were an eclectic group, two of us from Malvern Greenpeace and two from Transition Town Malvern. Our aim was to create a united protest against the proposed expansion of this and other dirty, coal fired power stations throughout the country. The meeting point was the local village playing field, which was decorated with colourful tents. Here we had our picnic while being entertained with live music (A few of us also had a go at line dancing, not good).
After lunch we made our way round the perimeter fence of the monolithic ominous building that is the power station, to create a 'Miliband' of energetic empowered people. A 1000 people joined that day to show the government that they are allowing big businesses to become the driving force behind governmental decisions instead of listening to the experts that say Climate Change is the biggest threat to mankind. The voices of the people need to be heard and events, such as this, are a way of making the government listen.
The whole day felt like a festive celebration of having the opportunity to make a difference.
