On a distinctly chilly Saturday, 4 June, Rakesh and I manned a Greenpeace table at the Newcastle Community Green Festival in Leazes Park, Newcastle. Various environmental groups, as well as local political and human rights groups, were represented at the festival, and there were live bands, food and craft stalls and other activities.
As it was children’s day, there was a range of child-orientated activities around the festival site. For our stall, Rakesh had designed a children’s game, which involved guessing the future location of the Cairns oilrig in Iceberg Alley by sticking pins in a map of the sea between Canada and Greenland. The game was popular with both children and adults! Other Greenpeace activities that drew interest were the tar sands and sustainable fisheries campaigns.
