This year Greenpeace has campaigned and taken action against the companies responsible for selling us tinned Tuna.  In conjunction with Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s channel 4 programmes and campaign, Fish fight which is geared towards ensuring that all the seafood we buy is caught by sustainable methods and from sustainable stocks.  Greenpeace concentrated their efforts on the 8 main suppliers of tinned Tuna in the UK:

  • Waitrose
  • The Co-operative
  • Princes
  • John West
  • Morrisons
  • Tesco
  • Sainsbury
  • Asda

They created a league table displaying how sustainable the tinned Tuna was, how honest the companies were being about the methods used to catch this Tuna and what methods they actually used; fish aggregation devices (Fads) and purse seine nets where creatures like Turtles, Rays and Sharks are also caught and killed as by catch or the more sustainable pole and line where only Tuna of the right age and size are caught.  The latest version can is:  http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/tunaleaguetable

The campaign has been very successful with almost all the companies agreeing to change the methods that are used to catch their Tuna fish, leaving only John West holding on to their larger profits in exchange for the loss of biodiversity in our oceans.

Please put your name to the following petition and help John West to change their policies:
