With most of our local volunteers otherwise occupied, Jane and I decided to take the Greenpeace message about Volkswagen to the streets of Beeston. Armed with a clipboard and a stack of VW campaign petition cards each, we jumped into action at 10:40am.
The air was chilly and as we stood, it began to rain. Despite this, the highstreet was busy with people and we received a very positive response from many. Even a climate-change-denier was convinced otherwise after a bit of chat and decided to sign a card!
With cold-reddened hands and noses, we decided to stop and warm up over a coffee at around 12:30. It turned out that we had been more successful than we had realised. 97 cards had been signed in less than 2 hours with only 2 campaigners!
We have taken a lesson from this: greater success can be found in campaigning outside the city centre. People seem to be in much less of a hurry and more willing to listen to what we have to say. I had a lot of fun as always and I am looking forward to our next street campaigning session. Hopefully we'll get into triple figures with our sign up rate then!
