So by the time I got home, we had got the email. New Zealand police climbers had gone on to the Shell drilling rig and arrested the Greenpeace climbers who had occupied the ship for the past 5 days. Nottingham and Derby groups had joined forces to leaflet the Shell garage on Derby Road (also known as Brian Clough Way) to bring attention to the fact that Shell want to drill off the coast of Alaska for oil. The irony of all this is inescapable. Climate change brought about by increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is affecting the Arctic more quickly than anywhere else on the planet and the ice is melting at an alarming rate. And as the ice melts it makes it easier for companies like Shell to float their rigs in and start drilling for oil which we burn and produce more carbon dioxide which makes climate change worse which melts the ice quicker which............well you get the message. As yesterday, when we went to Carlton, the manager of the garage was very phlegmatic about the whole thing. This particular garage is close to Nottingham Uni and every now and then the students take it into their heads to block the entrances of the garage with bikes so a bunch of nice polite Greenpeace folks was no problem. We were generally well received by passing people and drivers. A lot of people didn't know about the issue and were quite angry that drilling was planned. Many remembered the Exxon Valdez 23 years ago and the mess that caused and a lot of folks said they would log onto our website and find out more.
