Stormtrooper and VW starts shift towards the (green) Light. With help from a little friend.

Earlier this month, at the Madrid Motor Show, VW announced some improvements to some of its new cars that will reduce their emissions enough to beat existing European targets.  That shows it can be done - despite what VW said at the beginning of our campaign.  It's a victory but only a small one.  VW are still refusing  to support EU targets for vehicle emissions of 95g CO2/Km by 2020.  A massive part of this backdown by VW is down to the work of Greenpeace activists across Europe.  So now for some numbers to show the size this campaign grew to.  Since 10th November 2011, 13,000 action cards have been signed and forwarded to individuals working for VW; 26 VW events were organised, with 27,000 supporters told about the events, 177 blogs were generated and 21 videos were recorded.  And that is just in the UK!  We in Nottingham played our part in this so thanks to everyone who either took part in an event outside a VW garage, did secret leafletting of local VW forecourts, wrote letters, did 'secret shopper' visits to VW or stood in the street, clipboard in hand, getting people to sign the action cards.  It's times like this that we see we can make a difference - not perhaps the difference we wanted to see but we have caused VW to start making more fuel efficient cars and from the starting point when they would not even talk to Greenpeace that is no mean achievement.  Well done and thanks to you all.
