No rest for a polar bear at the moment! I’ve been out and about in Oxfordshire so much with all this Christmas stuff going on that I just haven’t had time to tell you about it. In November I went to Oxfam’s Christmas Fair and had a wonderful day meeting the public and so many of them wanted to sign the Arctic scroll, it was great! It was a bit hot for me indoors so I went for a pleasant stroll through Oxford with a nice man from Oxfam, to tell people to come and visit us in the Town Hall. I really enjoy helping out those human good causes.
Then I went undercover to watch Oxford City turn on its Christmas lights. I’d heard they had an arctic theme and sure enough, all the primary school children carried lanterns like icicles and stars in a procession following a giant lantern that looked just like my mate Paula. Brilliant! Some of the children were carrying lanterns like odd-looking birds. Someone told me they were called penguins and that they swam around under the ice. I’ve never seen anything quite like them, but they looked quite tasty.
So now I’d got the hang of these Christmas Light ceremonies I decided to go to Witney the night they turned theirs on, with lots of my Greenpeace friends. I even invited another friendly polar bear over. We heard the Prime Minister might be there, because this was his home, so we thought the more of us there, the more likely he might be to notice us. I’ve seen these pictures of him on a husky sled, so he should know a bit about my home in the arctic. In the end, I hardly saw the PM because I was mobbed by all the Witney children who were out with their parents. They all wanted their photos taken with us bears and then they signed up on the Arctic Scroll on those iPaw things. Very clever. Some extra Greenpeace people showed up too and had a Christmas card to give to the PM, to remind him to do the right thing for the climate in your Energy Bill and stop the ice melting. There’s a nice video of them on the Greenpeace website.
Then the next day, there was another Christmas Fair in Oxford organised by the Green Party and I met Santa Claus. He had a very attractive green robe – much nicer than that passé red coat I’ve been seeing everywhere. We took along a big box of toy animals that needed new homes and every single one of them went home with a new human. And loads more people signed the Arctic Scroll.
I thought I was going to Waitrose next but it turns out they’ve seen the light about buddying up with SHELL. So I thought I’d do this instead. Needed some help with the typing though...
