Could France eliminate nuclear weapons to save money?

Posted by bpeter_101 - 25 July 2012 at 9:50pm - Comments

There's a school of thought among some pro-Trident politicians that the UK has a moral duty to keep its nuclear weapons, because if we were to abandon them the only remaining European nuclear power would be the feckless French.

Laughable, of course, but the trouble for the Trident brigade is that even senior French politicians are now contemplating getting rid of their nuclear weapons.  According to ex-French Prime Minister Michel Rocard, by eliminating its nuclear stockpile “France would save 16 billion Euros per year and renounce a completely useless weapon” (full article available here).

If the French can do it, so can the Brits.
