Trident is a phallic symbol

Peter Snow once asked the question "Trident! "phallic symbol? Yes? No?"

I think the answer is a big yes. I certainly can't think what other uses it might have. It doesn’t increase our political influence globally. Germany and Japan have just as much an influence as us yet don't have any symbolic phalluses. And it certainly doesn’t make us any safer. It won’t prevent terrorism.
Is it really worth showing off to the rest of the world our mighty phallus (especially when we have to ask Americas permission to use it) when its going to cost us £97Billion? Really? A £97Billion phallic symbol in the middle of the worst recession since the war? Because if it's phallic symbols we need I’m sure we can come up with something a lot cheaper and a lot less dangerous.
