Here's an interesting figure from a recent Parliamentary Question asked by Independent MP Dai Davies. The Ministry of Defence has spent a total of £380 million so far on proposals to replace Trident nuclear submarine. The money has been spent on the 'concept phase' of the project – defining options and possibilities for the design of the new submarines - so there's nothing solid to show for it yet.
This money has been spent over the period from April 2007 (when Parliament voted to replace Trident) to December 2009. Now, by my calculations, that works out at well over a third of a million pounds per day over that period.
With a third of a million pounds you could buy a brand new, fully equipped, energy efficient community centre. If you wanted something nice for yourself instead, you could pick up a plush four bedroomed house in a very desirable area. Now doesn't that sound like better value for money?
Trident replacement - costing us a third of a million a day already!

I wonder who is doing the 'concept phase' and what they're doing with all the taxpayer loot... thats over £55,000 per hour (assuming 6 hours)
