What can you do in 2011?

That's the question being asked by ICAN. Please read their message below:

--------------------------------------------

As we enter 2011 ICAN is growing by the day - as is the urgency of the imperative to abolish nuclear weapons.

ICAN has recently opened new campaigning offices in Oslo and Geneva, as well as continuing our work toward a nuclear weapons treaty from our founding office in Melbourne, Australia.

But as the groundswell of support for a treaty to abolish nuclear weapons grows, so to does the threat.

This year we have already seen the New Start Treaty ratified in the US and Russian parliaments, but we are also aware of the limitations of the treaty, and that both the US and Russia remain committed to strengthening and modernising their overall nuclear arsenals.

We have also heard disturbing reports from Pakistan this week that the country is expanding its nuclear arsenal, and may soon overtake Britain as the fifth largest nuclear weapons power - potentially signalling a new nuclear arms race in Southern Asia.

We will be working all over the world to push for a nuclear weapons treaty - the best route we have to finally bring an end to the greatest single threat to our survival.

But we are also keen to hear your ideas!

What will you do in 2011 to make a nuclear abolition treaty a reality? The nuclear threat is too serious to ignore.

Yours sincerely,

The ICAN team
