Received following account from Sophia from last Wednesday's social. Please feel free to add coments, sure she would love some feedback:

'Last Wednesday I had the fine pleasure of hosting a little Greenpeace gathering in my home.  Nine of us, members and friends of the Southwest London group managed to squeeze together in my teeny living room to watch a film and have some chats.  Everyone also kindly brought along some nibbles to share - dip and pita turned out to be the most popular hit!

The film we watched is called 2012 Time for Change, one that I had seen a couple times before and feel quite inspired by.  To quickly sum up, it's a documentary shown from the perspecitive of writer/activist Daniel Pinchbeck, who draws on old theories from ancient cilvilations - specifically the Mayans who theorised that this would be a time for a changing of age.  The film gave some examples of practical solutions (and in my opinion - critical solutions) to some of today's environmental challenges.  It also touched on various forms of alternative practice such as yoga and meditation and daringly focused a bit on old tribal rituals that involve the usage of halucinatory substances as a way to access a higher conciousness.  These subjects of course stirred up some interesting discussion.  Unfortunately though the sound cut out before the end of the film so we could not hear how it finished but overall I think the general positive vibe from the film came across before the technical failure occurred.  Showed me to be better prepared next time!
But in a way that opened up more time for conversation, which led us to the topic that I believe normally comes up in these activist social gatherings and that is - is this all worth it?  All of the work, all of the effort, and all of the time spent trying to make a change, to make a difference.  Well, I think my overbearing optimism took over the debate on that one that night and my response to the question is - it doesn't matter.  We know what is right.  One may ask again and again - but what if it all doesn't work?!  And you can always respond - what if it does?

With that, I do hope that everyone had an enjoyable evening and it was great meeting some new people!  Hope to see you all again soon.
