Greenpeace's worldwide #savethearctic campaign has just been launched - as Antarctica once was, it's a wilderness under threat from oil companies greedy to exploit yet more dodgy oil - and of course the irony is that climate change, which has led to much of the floating ice-cap melting away, has opened up the Arctic to companies like Shell who care about nothing beyond profits and more profits - definitely a vicious circle. However, just like the Antarctic which is protected by a treaty banning mineral and oil exploitation, the Arctic can be saved too - with benefits for the rest of the world.
So, what can you do?
Well, the campaign is aiming to get a million (yes, a million) names on an Arctic Scroll which will be put into an indestructable pod on the sea bed at the North Pole. This will form the focus of the global campaign - raising awareness, putting pressure on companies like Shell, and setting the scene for an Arctic Treaty. To add your name, head to the campaign page or text (for free) ARCTIC followed by your name to 60002. Depending which method you choose, you'll get free ringtones or wallpapers, campaign updates and more.
We'll be campaigning in Southampton (we've got an Arctic banner and everything!), but wherever you are, get on the Scroll!
