If you've been following our Be A Fisherman's Friend campaign which aims to reform the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), you'll know all about the problems of overfishing, dodgy subsidies, discards and so on that plague the policy in its current form - and you'll also know why it's so important that we get it changed.
So, with the sun kindly shining down, three of us from the Southampton group took a very English approach to this EU issue - tea, tattoos and our first 'Fish in the Park' event. It's midweek, but that happens to work for us, and I don't mind taking the odd day off work, away from the computer... It always takes me (and I expect others) a little while to get into 'street campaigning' mode - approaching people, explaining that we're not after money, just a signature on a fish (!), and then if they stop, explaining what the campaign is about. But, it went really well - an overwhelmingly positive response from the public - OK, not everyone stops, but pretty much everyone who did stop then signed a card asking their MEP to support CFP reform, and a lot of people were aware of the issues of overfishing and discards from TV. I haven't counted all the cards yet, but it must be about 100 - result! Watch this space for more... and the tattoos, well...?
