Neil sharing his skills

Despite the blizzards and freezing weather, I went to GPHQ to take part in the Video skills share last Saturday. The purpose was to train us GP volunteers to make quality films of our actions and community outreach events – thereby  raising  awareness of what we do and encouraging  more people to get involved locally.

If we successfully film our events, non active members can see for themselves what being active involves and hopefully want to join in!

So, what did I learn? I found out how to plan the video for maximum impact using interviews, action and a bit of intrigue, how to  make it look professional, and get our message across to the viewers in the clearest possible way - all really straightforward bits of advice I can share with any budding film makers in the group. After this , our trainer for the day, Neil, invited us to critique some videos that had already been made  by various Greenpeace groups – including Southwark’s adventure at Surrey Quays’ city farm before Christmas, (yes folks – they really liked the dancing polar bear, but thought it would benefit from a steadier shot!)  The afternoon session was all about the technicalities of editing, adding soundtracks, voiceovers and captions.

The plan is to make a network for the film makers to share tips and  help each other out.

All in all a really useful days training , and I think there are other workshop days planned - so if anyone else is interested it’s well worth the time and effort.

So -  now I’m all trained up and ready to go.  When’s the next action?
