I finally got to be a bear ! After working as a volunteer on the Greenpeace Arctic scene throughout the summer festival season and looking at all the awesome photo's of local actions outside Shell garages on social media with supporters sporting the awesome polar bear costumes, I had accrued some serious bear envy, so I was delighted to get to wear one on the London day of action on Saturday.
It was an inspiring day, a really great turn out and a very positive day of campaigning to tell Shell to stop it's plans for destroying the Arctic by drilling for oil in that pristine and fragile environment.
As is very often the case we all found ourselves enjoying a couple of ales after a great days work and the closing of another fantastic year of campaigning for Greenpeace but we face many more challenges next year and I really get the feeling we are going to be very busy indeed, and I know I'm not alone in feeling very determined about getting involved as much as I possibly can to protect our environment which is under more pressure than ever and we really do need to keep the pressure on governments and corporations to urgently reduce CO2 emissions and increase clean and green renewables, the clock is ticking and Arctic oil is the last thing we need.
With many very large voices in the oil industry even saying Arctic drilling is a really bad idea, and that there will be leaks as a foregone conclusion, passing car drivers, many of whom honked and waved in support of our campaigning on Saturday know it's a bad idea, and even Waitrose don't want to be associated with Shell once they realised how bad an idea Arctic oil drilling is (with a little help) just what are Shell thinking ?
Why not tell Shell What your thinking and sign the Arctic Scroll http://savethearctic.org/ and then get involved with a local Greenpeace group, I am a member of the Waltham Forrest Greenpeace Group and Meetings are held at Ye Olde Rose and Crown on Hoe Street on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.15pm. Come along, it would be great to see you or find one nearer you here
