Well with the start of a new year, it is a great time to look back over 2011 and remind us all what we did. Hopefully this will give those new an idea of what West London Greenpeace get up to.
The beginning of the year was spent targeting the big tuna brands and supermarkets with street campaigning, and stickering warnings onto cans of tuna. Combined with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's Fish Fight, this turned out to be very successful with the giants falling one by one, changing their fishing policies to use more sustainable methods.
Months were spent organising the mammoth event that was the Rainbow Warrior Quiz night. Aimed at raising money for the new rainbow warrior and raising awareness for the group, everyone put in a wonderful effort. We had fantastic raffle prizes, home-baked cakes, carefully prepared presentations, short films and an orangutan, we had it all. Yes we did.
A nice opportunity you get each year is to help out with the huge Greenpeace presence at Glastonbury. I know a few of us made it again this time round. In the summer we also targeted Mattel who were using packaging contributing to deforestation. We created a barbie hunt where barbie related objects were hidden around Hammermsith and Hounslow complementing the huge billboards and the great video of Ken dumping Barbie. Another win!
In the Autumn we did many innovative street campaigns on the Common Fisheries Policy (Change the F***ing Policy) with a little fishing game we made to reel in the families. This is an ongoing campaign to try and get some political will behind the policy reform this year.
Winter brought the new Rainbow Warrior III to London! Definitely a highlight of the year. An impressive ship indeed!
We ended the year with a new and ongoing campaign against Volkswagen who are lobbying against emissions laws. It's not often you get the chance to dress up as a Stormtrooper.
Well that's 2011, I've almost certainly missed something out, but I can't remember everything. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen. Here's to 2012!
