People always say things will never change, Boy did we prove them wrong in 2011.
2011 was a fantastic year campaigning with Greenpeace. It started with a huge concentration on Tuna fishing practices, the first "target" was going to be TESCO as the Worst Retailer, but no sooner had I prepared the information for our January meeting than Tesco said they would improve their practice. It seems just the mere thought of Greenpeace at their store step was enough to convince them to change. Then one by one each supermarket and then John West and Princes, committed to sustainable "pole and line" fishing methods.
One of my most memorable moments was our Rainbow Warrior Benefit Gig, I had a cracking night at the Firefly in Worcester, Djing, and raising a goodly sum for the 3rd Rainbow Warrior to boot. One of the Barbie's from our Forests campaign against Mattel, was still hanging from the chandalier last time I looked. Mattel were contracting with Sinar Mas, who were cutting down the Indonesian Rainforest, as the summer began Mattel agreed to pull out of the contract and create protection for this unique environment. http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/blog/forests/mattel-and-barbie-drop-deforestation-20111005
The year ended with the beginning of the current VW campaign. VW have been undermining proposed EU legislation that will set new carbon emission standards a vital step to limiting the effect of climate change. And finally....... Seeing and visiting the new Rainbow Warrior. I had no idea that the impact seeing and standing on this ship would have on me would be so strong. It made me realise what all the campaigning, the talking to people, the petitions, the hopes and fears can bring to create a real difference. A dream, a boat, a grit and determination, a love for the planet, social justice and a belief in yourself and your greenpeace mates creates the power to make ripples occur that start waves.
