I’ve passed north of the polar circle on our trip visiting the west coast of Greenland. The temperature has dropped to -15C: snow is mounting outside my window and in the beautiful harbour city Sisimiut the fjord is filled with ice. At night time, the northern lights are dancing in the sky to the distant howling from the town’s sledge dogs. This wolf-like dog is only allowed north of the Arctic Circle. In a few days, I will be debating oil drilling at the local college – a college that focuses specifically on minerals and petroleum.

Back in July, if you remember, fifty Greenpeace polar bears occupied Cairn Energy's Edinburgh headquarters, looking for the company's Arctic oil spill response plan and taking your messages to the heart of the company. (I'd post pictures to jog your memory but I'm afraid we're still gagged by Cairn's interdict.)

Yesterday brought the news that yet another Cairn well off Greenland - the sixth so far - has come up dry. The Delta-1 well will be plugged and abandoned and Cairn now has to pin its hopes for this year's drilling season on two remaining wells.

This month sees the Arctic sea ice minimum, a litmus test for the health of the global climate, with indications suggesting the extent in 2011 could be the lowest level ever.

Earlier this month, after more than 100,000 of you asked Cairn Energy to open up its Arctic oil spill response plan to public scrutiny, the government of Greenland stepped in and published it.

The verdict is now in. Veteran marine biologist and international oil spill expert Professor Richard Steiner has completed a review of the plan and, well, it's no wonder Cairn didn't want you to see it.

This morning, Cairn Energy published its half-yearly results. There isn't much for the company to shout about in there; halfway through their 2011 drilling season, they have yet to find any oil in the Arctic.

The one we went to the Arctic and to Cairn's Edinburgh HQ to look for? The one they were so worried we'd found, they slapped a legal interdict on us to prevent us from publishing it?

Today Cairn Energy published the latest operational update for its risky oil drilling off Greenland and the news, at least for the wildcat oil company, was far from good.

For the second year in succession Cairn, has announced it has found no oil in the Arctic.

A message to the oil industry: what spill response?

Last week, the oil industry was in London. The World National Oil Companies Congress - sponsored by the likes of Chevron, Total and Statoil and addressed by BP's Bob Dudley - "brings together the most senior executives from NOCs [National Oil Companies]" to discuss, among other things, how to "overcome deepwater challenges" and "benefit from shale and unconventional opportunities".
