Google takes the top spot, but there's still more to be done on climate issues across the technology industry
The tussle for the top of our Cool IT leaderboard has taken its latest twist, with Google grabbing the top spot ahead of 20 other technology companies, including Cisco and Ericsson.
For most of us, when we think about our environmental footprint, the
first things that spring to mind are how to commute to work, the kind of
bags we use for food shopping, or the detergents we wash our clothes
with. But how often do we consider the energy we use when surfing the web? Or, how much polluting, dirty energy our
Facebook profile generates?
Google rules the virtual world but if it ruled the real one, would things be a bit different? Google.org which is the philanthropic arm of Google blogged that it wants to see America weaned off fossil fuels by 2030 for its electricity. Also, Google's own energy efficiency initiatives will be equivalent to shutting down 10-20 coal-fired power stations by 2010 if they are successful.
