Live and direct from the Amazon
Posted by jamie on 1 September 2008.
On Friday, a Greenpeace team broadcast a live webcast from the heart of the Amazon rainforest, in an area which was still-smouldering after a recent forest fire. Even rainforests have dry seasons and during the current one, fires both natural and man-made are devastating huge areas.
It was an amazing technical achievement but that wasn't the reason they did it - they were there to show how the forest is being cleared for a variety of reasons (in this case, to open up areas for cattle).

Carrotmob is taking an interesting approach to harnessing consumer power (via Making Waves):
Wall-E + Kleenex = Iron-E
Posted by jamie on 22 August 2008.
I haven't seen Wall-E yet (Joss tells me it's very good) but it sounds like a cross between Happy Feet and Silent Running - cute creatures and incredible animation bundled up with an environmental message. Now while the intentions of the film makers may have been to push the notion of a cleaner, greener world, the companies sitting between us and them seem to have other ideas and Wall-E is being used to sell all manner of less-than-green products.
In the US, one of these is Kleenex which currently has the little robot appearing on its boxes. As Kimberly-Clark, the company that makes Kleenex, is clearcutting forests to make it, Greenpeace USA thought this was a little odd. In fact, they thought it was the height of iron-e. So, with the help of political cartoonist Mark Fiore, they produced this spoof video.

The bad news is that the vote on illegal timber amongst members of the European Commission has been delayed (they're looking at legislation to ban dodgy wood from Europe) and now probably won't take place until September. The good news is that it gives us all a chance to have some fun in the meantime (and do some creative campaigning at the same time).
We all love forests and we want you to show the powers that be in the EU just how much. The forests have already made their own effort, but here's what we'd like you to do:

Amy goes to Glastonbury
Posted by bex on 11 July 2008.
After her adventures at the Make a NOise carnival, Amy Greenhouse is back. This time, she joined us at Glastonbury to show the farm a bit of love. The question is, where's Trace?
With big thanks to Niall and Jason from Tellyjuice.

Our activist friends, Junichi and Toru, are still behind bars: 23 days without charge after exposing a whale meat smuggling scandal.
A huge thanks to all 200,000 plus of you who've written to Japan's prime minister to free them - let's keep up the pressure!
And keep an eye on the latest count, updated hourly:
Scott of the Antarctics
Posted by jamie on 2 July 2008.
We received an email from Harvey Parkes, one half of the film production company Balti and Havana, promoting their new short Scott of the Antarctics so I'm giving it a plug here. Not merely because they've kindly given Greenpeace a mention at the end (thanks guys!), but because it's a rather gorgeous little piece about penguins, swimming pools and the antarctic ice cap.
It's been entered for the Virgin Media Shorts competition, so if you feel inclined you can cast your vote or just enjoy the film.

A few months back when Niall and Jason from Tellyjuice contacted us, they said they liked our videos on YouTube but thought we could be "well, um… funnier". I had to admit that we often forget to see the funny side of things surrounded by all this doom and gloom (did you hear about the bees on the Today programme this morning?!).

Posted by jamie on 21 May 2008.
If you simply can't wait for the new Indiana Jones film released tomorrow (I certainly can), this short film might help ease the tension in which the man with the bullwhip, Harrison Ford, lends a very personal part of himself to the fight against deforestation and climate change. It's either brilliant or grotesque, I can't quite make up my mind, but the old pun 'hair today, gone tomorrow' is definitely appropriate in this instance. But judge for yourself.
