Victory! Greenpeace reaction to Police and Crime Bill vote

Share

In reaction to the decision by the House of Lords last night to vote down amendments in the The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill made by the government, which would have effectively removed the right to protest, Greenpeace UK’s political campaigner, Megan Randles, said:

“These votes are a clear victory for democracy and our freedoms. It’s so fitting that the many protests staged over the past few days against these outrageous attempts to remove our right to protest played such a key role in defeating the government last night. There couldn’t be a clearer demonstration of why removing these oppressive amendments was so important.

“From climate activism to grieving families looking for justice; from those calling for the increased safety of women to those objecting to a European Super League, regardless of the cause everyone should be able to stand up for what they believe in.

“Now Priti Patel’s attempts to overthrow democracy have been rejected by the Lords, we need MPs from across the political spectrum to pressure the Home Office into rethinking some of the other draconian parts of the Police and Crime Bill.”
